Minority condemns post-election violence, calls for peace, stability in the country

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Ninth Parliament has raised alarm over what it describes as a surge in violence, thuggery, and intimidation following the recent elections.

At a press conference held on Thursday, January 9, at Parliament House in Accra, the Caucus condemned the alleged actions of individuals purported to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the party’s leadership of sponsoring these activities.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, who addressed the Parliamentary Press Corps, cited numerous incidents of violence on election day, including physical assaults on voters, attempts to disrupt the electoral process, and harassment of election officials.

She highlighted specific cases, such as alleged arson attacks on Electoral Commission offices in Damongo and Tepa, and the destruction of electoral materials at the Ayensuano District Electoral Office.

The Minority Caucus further urged all political actors to commit to maintaining peace and respecting the rule of law as Ghana navigates the post-election period.

Madam Appiagyei called on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that those perpetrating violence were brought to justice.

The Caucus also urged the NDC to focus on governance rather than disturbing the peace.

“We remind President John Dramani Mahama that his electoral mandate is to formulate policies for the development of the country, not to endorse chaos and lawlessness,” the Deputy Minority Leader said.

The Caucus also assured the nation that the NPP Party remained committed to peace, dialogue, and strengthening democratic institutions, and has put measures in place to ensure a smooth country.
